IDZ presents the Award Jury 2014

IDZ has nominated five renowned design and usability experts as Jury Members of the Usability Award competition 2014. The jury is the core of the Usability Award. The independent experts’ many years of experience guarantee the highest quality of the competition. The jury members’ different competencies and specializations ensure a balanced evaluation of the various competition entries in areas of design quality and user orientation.

Usability Award 2014
International Design Center Berlin (IDZ) bestows the Usability Award for outstanding design quality and convincing user orientation in consumer products. All nominated products are presented in a special exhibition during IFA, the world’s leading show for consumer electronics in Berlin (9/5-10/2014. Awards are bestowed in the following product categories: Home Environment; Audio, Hi-Fi & Car Media; Hardware, Media & Networks; Telecommunication; Medical Care & Life Science; Home & Mobile Electronics. Submitted products are evaluated on the basis of transparent and practical benchmarks and evaluation criteria.

Members of the 2014 Usability Award Jury are:

Prof. Birgit Weller
Professor at HTW Berlin, co-founder use: Identity and Design Network
Expert on Universal Design
Birgit Weller is a product designer. After graduating from the Kunsthochschule Berlin in 1985 she worked as a designer at LEW/AEG/Bombardier Transportation. Since that time she has taken on tasks in the fields of transportation, investment and consumer goods design, packaging, exhibition design and strategic design consultation for globally active companies (Bombardier, Miele, Deutsche Bahn, etc.) and the Government, working in many countries including India, France, Finland, China, Cuba, Canada or the Netherlands. Birgit Weller is a professor of industrial design in Hanover since 1994 and head of the industrial design department at HTW Berlin since 2012. Her research activities cover design, project development and design methodology as well as universal design thinking in an intercultural context. Mrs Weller is a member of the international INAREA network and co-founder of the agency “use: identity and design network”. She has been a board member of the International Design Center Berlin since 2002.

Claude Toussaint
Managing Partner, designaffairs GmbH Munich
Expert on Usability and User Interface Design
After his university degree in engineering, Claude Toussaint passed his postgraduate design course at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design. He started working at designaffairs GmbH in 1999 and set up the interface division. Since March 2007 Claude Toussaint is one of four owners and Managing Partners of designaffairs GmbH. He is head of the interdisciplinary interface team and manages projects for customers like Porsche, MAN, Opel, Siemens, Bosch, Datev or RWE. Next to his role as managing partner, Claude Toussaint is working as guest lecturer at HTA Luzern and speaker on international congress events. He published several articles about Human Centered and User Interface Design in journals and books.

Karsten Henze
Head of CI/CD and Creation, DB Mobility Logistics AG
Expert on Corporate Design
Karsten Henze graduated in Communication at the University of Arts in Berlin. Starting in 1990 he worked as an employed advertising consultant at Siemens. In 1995 he joined MetaDesign, one of Germany’s leading corporate design agencies, where he worked as a design and project manager on complex design systems such as Volkswagen, Dusseldorf Airport and the Berlin Transportation Authority. In 2000 he changed to Pixelpark AG, a then leading multimedia agency, where he worked as an account director for clients in the German retail branch. In 2001 Mr Henze was appointed Head of the Corporate Design/Corporate Identity and Creation Department of Deutsche Bahn, Germany’s leading international transportation and logistics services provider. He is in charge of the global brand appearance of the entire DB-group across all design areas. Karsten Henze is executive chairman of the board of the International Design Center (IDZ) in Berlin and holds a lectureship at the University of Applied Sciences, HTW Berlin. He lives and works in Berlin and Frankfurt.

Peter Wouda
Head of Exterior Design, Volkswagen Design Center Potsdam
Expert on Industrial Design
Peter Wouda studied transportation design in Pforzheim and London. Since his graduation from the Royal College of Art in 1996 he has been working as a designer for the Volkswagen Group. Mr Wouda started his career in Volkswagen Headquarters in Wolfsburg before changing to Skoda, where he has been responsible for Exterior Design between 2000 and 2006. Since 2007 he has been leading the Exterior Design Department in Volkswagens Group Design studio in Potsdam, near Berlin. Together with his international team, he is responsible for creating concept and production designs for Volkswagen and other group brands such as Audi, Skoda, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Ducati and Porsche. His team created the design and final appearance of the Volkswagen XL1, amongst many others.

Dr.-Ing. Sebastian Glende
General Manager, YOUSE GmbH Berlin
Expert on Usability and User Orientation
Dr.-Ing. Sebastian Glende has been working on innovative approaches to user involvement for many years. He has done research and worked at Berlin Institute of Technology and at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. During this time, he has supported the development of many product and service developments and was involved in setting up the Senior Research Group. In 2009, he formed YOUSE with Dr Christoph Nedopil. The company involves end users in the innovation process on a professional basis and helps to design new products and services in a simple, functional way. Mr Glende was and is active in many different functions, among others in der International Ergonomics Association, the innovation partnership between BMBF and VDE, as well as the TSB “Vernetztes Leben” (Networked Life) expert group. He won the Körber foundation study prize and the Berlin-Brandenburg business plan competition. At YOUSE, he has been applying himself mainly to the development and performance of national and international research projects, as well as the further content development of user integration. As the managing director, he also handles the development of collaborations and publicity.
