»IBAN discrimination occurs when companies in the EU reject transactions from accounts with a foreign IBAN, causing financial inconvenience and barriers for expatriates. N26 proactively addresses this problem by introducing "IBAN Switch" as a convenient feature in their banking app. The appealing visual design emphasizes simplicity and consistency, while a step-by-step wizard guides the user through the process and elegantly reduces complexity. N26's seemingly niche solution adeptly addresses a real challenge by providing a lightweight and trustworthy banking experience.«

Three questions to the project team

What was the particular challenge of the project from a UX point of view?
From a UX perspective, the primary challenge of the project was integrating a seemingly simple flow into the multifaceted dimensions of our product. This required extensive alignment and collaboration across various teams, ensuring that every aspect of the user experience was seamlessly interconnected and smooth. The complexity lay in the intricate coordination needed to make the process feel effortless to the user, while managing the interdependencies behind the scenes.

What was your personal highlight in the development process? Was there an aha!-moment, was there a low point?
Reflecting on the development process, we experienced a transformative journey with moments of challenge and revelation. The initial phase presented significant technical limitations, making it nearly impossible to deliver a smooth experience, leading to a low point during our early research and ideation efforts. However, a pivotal change occurred through intensive collaboration with our tech team. This synergy led us to rethink and revamp our entire architecture, focusing on user experience. This critical shift, our 'aha moment,' illuminated the path forward, enabling us to empower users to bank seamlessly in their own way. It was a breakthrough that transformed our challenges into a successful, user-centric solution.

Where do you see yourself and the project in the next five years?
In the next five years, I see the project as a key player in banking, offering users the freedom to move while keeping their bank with N26. As N26 grows and expands into new markets, I see the project scaling alongside, reaching a wider audience and adapting to diverse financial landscapes. Personally, I aim to grow in tandem with these evolving challenges. My focus will be on deepening collaborations within the company and enhancing our overall maturity in UX practices. By fostering a culture of innovation and awareness, I hope to contribute significantly to the UX community, sharing our learnings and insights. This journey is not just about personal growth, but also about giving back and elevating the field of UX as a whole.
